Program Description

The Graduate Minor in Stem Cell Biology is administered by the faculty of the Graduate Minor Field of Stem Cell Biology. This is minor field only. Research graduate students from any discipline at Cornell are invited to enroll in the Graduate Minor in Stem Cell Biology. The minor gives students across the university the opportunity to take advantage of the wide variety of stem cell biology research offered by Cornell faculty. This minor graduate field is intended to provide both broad and specific training in the rapidly developing areas of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.

Upon successful completion of the required classes and designation of one minor special committee member under the “Stem Cell Biology” minor concentration, the student will receive a “Stem Cell Biology Minor Concentration” on their official Cornell transcript.

It is incumbent on each student to confirm with their primary (major) graduate field administration to confirm that they allow minor special committee members to be designated in Stem Cell Biology in fulfillment of their own guidelines on special committee minor members.

It is incumbent on each faculty to validate that any student whose special committee that they serve on under the “Stem Cell Biology” minor designation completes these requirements before they validate thesis completion (through B exam and dissertation approvals). The Graduate School does not crosscheck eligibility and course completion.

If either student or faculty identifies incomplete requirements or incapability with the student’s major Ph.D. field guidelines, then the faculty’s minor committee designation must be switched from “Stem Cell Biology” to another appropriate field and the minor will not be awarded.

Graduate Minor Field Requirements

  • The minor is fulfilled with a minimum of at least 5 credit hours from the courses below.
  • Students must complete BIOMS 7900 Seminars in Stem Cell Research for 4 terms in total.
  • A minimum 3.0 GPA is required in the coursework completed for the minor.
  • Students must have a member of the Minor Graduate Field in Stem Cell Biology appointed as a member of their committee.
