Sustainability Course Guide
Cornell University considers sustainability an essential part of its mission to create a collaborative environment that empowers students to recognize the significance of current and future environmental challenges and identify innovative solutions to overcome them.
With sustainability as a key focus, Cornell integrates concepts and practices across all disciplines, from architecture, engineering, to the arts. Over 20% of current course offerings have a primary and explicit emphasis on sustainability, or integration of sustainability concepts into their course content.
A sustainability course may:
- Have the primary and explicit focus on sustainability as an integrated concept having social, economic, and environmental dimensions and/or on understanding or solving one or more major sustainability challenge.
- Be primarily focused on a topic other than sustainability but incorporates a unit or module on sustainability or a sustainability challenge, includes one or more sustainability-focused activities, or integrates sustainability issues throughout the course as a concept having social, economic, and environmental dimensions.
The university's commitment to sustainability is continually expanding, as themes of environmental protection, social equity, and economic justice are increasingly integrated into more course curricula.
