Program

The South Asia Program coordinates research, teaching, and special campus events relating to Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. The program faculty include members from a variety of disciplines, including agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, anthropology, architecture, art, Asian studies, city and regional planning, classics, comparative literature, development sociology, ecology, economics, English, government, history, history of art, industrial and labor relations, information science, international agriculture, linguistics, literature, nutritional sciences, public administration, and religious studies. Undergraduates with a special interest in the region may major in Asian Studies with a South Asian concentration, or complete a South Asia minor with any other major. Graduate students may pursue the M.A. degree in Asian Studies with a concentration in South Asia.

Languages offered are Bangla, Hindi, Nepali, Pali, Persian, Punjabi (DL), Sanskrit, Sinhala, Tamil (DL), Tibetan (DL) and Urdu. Foreign Language and Area Studies scholarships are available to undergraduate and graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Scholarships are available for undergraduates and graduate students studying intensive language in the summer at an intermediate or advanced level. Cornell is a member of the American Institutes of Bangladesh, Indian, Pakistan, and Sri Lankan Studies, and the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies.
